The Garden Department is a community garden, a shared space and a living entity intersecting gardening and ecology at the centre of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie & Sandberg Instituut. It aims to become a place where theory can be a lived experience, as well as acting as a meeting place for ecological thought, ethical creation and decolonial approaches. The Garden gives and holds space for people to individually and collectively develop their practice as a lived experience, in which one can try out things in and with the body, in concern with material conditions and the living world around us. Currently the Garden Department offers monthly garden days where students, departments and staff can be a part of the maintenance of the space, grow their own vegetables or expand their practice into the garden, creating an interconnected network of regenerative practices across the academy.
Currently the Garden Department is being stewarded by Sophie Dandanell and Amalie 'Sveske' Ourø.
