Sophie Dandanell is a Danish artist and educator based in the Netherlands. Her practice is grounded in ecological thinking, approaching art-making as a site for regenerative exchange between human and more-than-human. Through material processes which often take the garden as a starting point, she experiements with natural dyeing research, installations, and writing. Through this she investigates how artistic practice can foster attentiveness and relational ways of being. Central to her work is the question of how we find common ground between humans and more-than-human in the world that we all live (with)in – where do we gather, listen, and (day)dream together?
She is affiliated with the Gerrit Rietveld Academie, where she co-organizes, together with Amalie Sveske Ourø, the para-educational platform The Garden Department. The initiative explores how regenerative and land-based practices can be meaningfully integrated into art and design education, contributing to broader conversations around sustainability, pedagogy, and collective learning through garden days and broader programming.
She holds a BA in TXT (Text and Textile) from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie (2024) and an MA in Art Praxis from the Dutch Art Institute (2026). Recent presentations and projects include Cranbrook Academy of Art, Detroit (2026), Bouwput, Amsterdam (2026), Vrij Paleis, Amsterdam (2025), and Galleri 54, Gothenburg (2024). Her writings have been published in publications and online magazines including The Garden Above School: PAGES/LEAVES, IDOART.dk, and Manchester-based zine: An Ode to Walking. Moreover, with the Garden Department, she contributes to ongoing research on regenerative arts education in collaboration with institutions such as Rhode Island School of Design (2023), ArtEZ University of the Arts (2026), and Fontys Academy of the Arts (2025).
